5 Common Causes For a Whirlpool Front-Load Washer Not Starting

A Whirlpool front-load washer that won’t start doesn’t mean it’s doomed for replacement. In most cases, a simple DIY fix or straightforward repair can restore function. Here’s how to determine the source of the problem and the right solution.

1. Washing Machine Not Getting Power

If your Whirlpool washing machine won’t turn on and none of the control panel buttons respond, it may not be receiving power. The washer requires adequate and consistent electrical power to turn on and perform its functions.

The following power issues can keep the washer from starting:

  • Power cord isn’t plugged in properly: Make sure the cord is fully plugged into a functioning outlet.
  • The washer is plugged in via an extension cord. These cords can’t reliably transmit the voltage the washer needs, causing surges that can interrupt power.
  • Tripped circuit breaker: Check your home’s circuit breaker box for tripped breakers that can cut off power. Reset any breakers if necessary.

After an interruption in power, the washer may need to be reset to resume or start a wash cycle. Unplug the washer or disconnect it from power at the circuit breaker. After one minute, restore power, select a wash cycle, and press “Start.”

2. Door Isn’t Latching Shut

3. Washer Controls Are Locked

Specific settings, like the Delay Start feature, delay the start of a wash cycle to a preselected later time. To disable Delay Start, press the “Power” button to turn the washer off before turning it on again. If the control panel displays an error code, it’s alerting you to a particular issue that could impair function. 

The following error codes can result in a Whirlpool washer not starting:

  • “Err”: Displays if you try to start the washer while the door is open or change a setting mid-cycle. Always make sure the door is closed correctly before starting the washer, and only change settings after pausing a cycle.
  • “Dr”: Shows when the washer door hasn’t been opened for three consecutive wash cycles. To restart a cycle, open the door and close it again before restarting.
  • “-:–“: Will display if no cycle is selected. Always select a cycle before starting the washer.

Lastly, make sure you press the “Start” button firmly when starting the washer. It must be pushed and held for up to 3 seconds to activate the cycle.
